J.L. D’Souza Memorial Inter-School English Debate

St. Joseph’s Academy organised the 11th  annual J.L. D’Souza Memorial Inter-School English debate competition on 23rd August 2014 at 10:15 am in the school auditorium. The debate is held annually in the memory of late Mr. J.L. D’Souza who served SJA for forty long years.

Seven schools participated namely Convent of Jesus and Mary, The Asian School, Summer Valley School, RIMC, St. Mary’s School, The Doon School, St. George’s College and SJA. Being the host school, SJA merely participated but did not compete for the trophy or individual prizes. This year the participating schools were allotted pseudonyms based on the names of flowers  to ensure anonymity and fair judgement.

The event began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Chief Guest Rev. Bro. Benedict, community leader and Rev. Bro. Dennis, principal of St. Joseph’s Academy. Rev. Bro. Xavier, Vice-Principal of SJA also graced the occasion with his presence.  Dr. (Mrs.) Daljeet Kaur, principal of Patrician College of Education, was a special guest for the debate. The esteemed judges for the event were Mrs. V. Kalia, Mrs. J. Mehta and Mrs. N. Ojha. Gauri Rawat and Mallika Arora compered the event and Ayushi Lamba , the chairperson was assisted by Divyansh Piplani and Shourya Shukla.

The motion under discussion was “India’s ‘Unity in Diversity’ is a farce”. The debate commenced after an hour of brain-racking session. All the participants spoke with conviction and confidence.

After two hours of compelling arguments from all the speakers, the result showed that there was a tie between Aayushmaan Choudhary of St. George’s College and Deeksha Chandra from Convent of Jesus and Mary for the position of the Second Runner-up speaker, the First Runner-up speaker was Vrindam Nagpal of The Doon School. The Best Speaker as well as the Best Rebuttal was bagged by Tejasvi Singh of Convent of Jesus and Mary. After shining in the individual category, Convent of Jesus and Mary was adjudged the Best Team.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by the Principal, Rev. Bro. Dennis.
